Search The Business Press Archives

To search The Business Press back to September 11, 1995, 1992 and/or The Press-Enterprise back to September 28, first select which paper or papers you want to search at Select Newspaper(s).

Simple Searching

You can search for a name, word or phrase by simply entering them. You can refine your result by using "Boolean" connectors (see below).

Simple searches:	museum
	james smith
	Orange Blossom Festival

Note: the searching is not case sensitive. You can capitalize or not, as you choose.

You then need to choose the total number of returns you want from Display Up To box and the order in which you want to see the results from the Sort box.

Then click on the Search Button. (If you make a mistake, click on Reset.)

You do not need to make any other choices to search. But there are options to help narrow your search.

Boolean Searching

In addition to single words, names or phrases, you can narrow your search by connecting several search words or phrases with AND , OR or BUTNOT :

AND:	museum and james smith
	museum and james smith and Orange Blossom Festival
OR:	museum or gallery or exhibit Note: "or" means "either/or"
BUTNOT:	james smith butnot museum director
	riverside museum butnot entertainment (you want stories about a museum but not any that appear in the Entertainment section - e.g. you want news stories about city funding, not stories about upcoming events)

You can also separate parts of your search to avoid ambiguous questions by using parentheses:

( museum or gallery ) and director and James Smith
(You're looking for James Smith who is the director of a museum or gallery, you don't remember which. Your question says "I want stories about someone who is director of a museum or of a gallery.")

( baseball and softball ) and bloomington high school
(You're looking for both baseball and softball stories involving bloomington high school.)

You can also specify stories by a certain writer by using parentheses:

Guido and byline ( bernstein )
(Means you want columns by Dan Bernstein in which his dog Guido is mentioned.)

Searching by Date

If you make no choice of dates or date ranges, you search will cover all dates. If you want to narrow your search by date, you can choose either of two ways to do so. Neither option includes today's date.

Choose From

"Choose From" gives you the choice of date range for 14 days, 6 months, or a given year.

From - To

"From-To" gives you the choice of specifying exactly the range dates you want to search. If you want to search a single date, put the same date in both the From and To boxes.
